Maureen McKenzie has a love for life and at 83-years-of-age has no intention of staying idle or waiting for her body to stop.
Maureen lives at Rosetta Village in Encounter Bay with her husband and been holding exercise classes in the village community hall for nearly 20 years, as well as in SeaChange Village in Goolwa.
The exercise routines are based on dance and choreographed to music.
More than 10 years ago Maureen produced her first exercise DVD, called ‘Mo’s Musical Moves, Exercise with a Dance Flavour for Seniors’.
“Thanks to an editorial article, which was picked up from The Times (July 7, 2010), our home became a production line selling copies to many residents living in South Australian country towns,” Maureen said.
“Many of them said they were so thrilled with the DVD because they didn’t have the facilities of larger towns or cities. As well as that several retirement and residential villages purchased copies to use in group sessions in their facilities.”
In 2011, Maureen produced a companion disc which contained similar exercise routines.
However, with the passage of time and after two orthopaedic procedures, Maureen began to realise that not only herself, but others, would benefit from using a chair instead of standing up.
“So I began to develop similar exercises sitting down, or holding on for balance. Never dreaming I would ever produce any more discs, during the time of isolation earlier this year I was challenged to work on producing a third disc, devoted entirely to helping those with balance and/or breathing challenges and this is now available for sale,” she said.
“As well as being able to share these exercise routines with others 25 per cent of sales will be donated to ‘The Sandra Jones Centre’ in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, my former country of residence.
“Under extreme economic difficulties they care for needy children in the name of Jesus.”
